Come on along for this frightfully fun and scary walk (2-3 mile) through the oldest parts of Boston visiting the oldest burying grounds in the city! We'll be exploring the darkest and
We will meet at the entrance to the historic Central Burying Ground located near the corner of Boylston and Tremont Streets in downtown Boston. Although there's no street number for the graveyard, the entrance is opposite 120 Boylston St. (an Emerson College building). For those taking the T (MBTA), the entrance is just around the corner from Boylston T Station.
It sure was a ghoulishly great walk around the most ancient and spooky burying grounds in historic Boston! It was a nice crisp and sunny day for the long and fascinating ramble (You really wouldn't want to do this type of thing on a bleak day!) Some highlights included visiting the graves of famous painter Gilbert Stuart, hearing about the sad story of Chow Manderien, paying our respects to the resting places of the patriots of the Revolution, seeing the grave of Elizabeth Pain (inspiration for The Scarlet Letter), the sad story of the Worthlakes and their unfortunate drowning and the gravestone of Daniel Malcolm - riddled with bullets as a target by the Brits duing the Revolution - and last, but not least, we visited the ancient tomb of the Reverends Cotton and Increase Mather, made infamous with their involvement in the Salem witchcraft hysteria. After all of the graveyard madness, we sure were all in need of some good cheer, so off we tromped to a local watering hole/eatery to schmooze and compare spooky notes about our scary day!
