Long Trail Winter Section

01/24/2025 Region: New England Activity Type: Weekend Trip Place: Middlebury , VT

I'm working on completing the Long Trail in sections. Because of my work schedule I've picked up (and now enjoy the challenge) winter hiking and have completed a little over half of it. The last two have been attempts at a two night trip from Middlebury Gap north to Lincoln Gap. Each time I have had to turn around after the first night and hike back to Middlebury Gap the next day (first one was a learning curve with winter gear and the second my hiking partner's dog couldn't do two more days.)

Third time's the charm. Would anyone be interested? Would be a pick a good weather weekend kind of thing then an early start on Saturday, five miles to Skyline Lodge, eight miles on Sunday to Cooley Glen Shelter passing beside Breadloaf and over Roosevelt, then six miles to Lincoln Gap by early afternoon on Monday.

I'd love to backpack sections of the LT with you but when the temps are closer to freezing (in winter) or after mud season, like late May.

I think it's a great idea and worthy to be listed once details are figured out. Not sure I'd be able to attend, but I like it.
