Delta National Forest is located in the delta floodplain of the Mississippi River about 15 miles north of Vicksburg. It is one of the few hardwood forests remaining in the Mississippi Delta and is the only bottomland hardwood national forest in the United States.

At the time of America's early settlement this area was a vast and unbroken hardwood forest full of wildlife and fish. The rich natural resources of the area sustained such an extensive prehistoric Indian population that the delta has been termed the cradle of cultural development in North America.

Delta National Forest lies within the Mississippi Waterfowl Flyway and is an excellent place to observe the habits of migratory waterfowl species. The 60,000-acre bottomland hardwood forest floods in winter, providing excellent duck habitat. The forest also contains three virgin old-growth research natural areas and several large greentree waterfowl reservoirs.
