Meeting Time: 1:30 PM

Event Coordinator: ChrisL
Wakefield, MA

Max # People: 20

Trip Guiding / Event Fee: No, I will not be asking participants for money

Difficulty Level: Easy

SUMMARY:

In short - a co-event with Chiltern Mountain Club, this'll be an easy 2.5 mile hike around Pierce Lake in the Breakheart Reservation north of Boston, close to routes I-95 and 1. There might be an opportunity for swimming.

More details: We’ll enter from the REAR Hemlock Road entrance in Wakefield (it’s a little quieter than the portion closer to route 1. The first 25% and last 30% will be on paved fire roads with the middle on paths along the shore. Optional coffee afterwards. Anything more than a drizzle will cancel. As of now there's no rain date.

There’s a beach towards the end. If it’s a nice enough day we can stop and take a dip. If you’re interested wear your suit - it’s the off-season and there probably aren’t changing facilities.

Breakheart Reservation info (and trail map) - https://www.mass.gov/locations/breakheart-reservation. From.the rear entrance we’ll go counterclockwise around Pierce Lake/Lower Pond.

Directions -

NOTE - SEE ALL CAPS NOTE BELOW:

The rear entrance shares a parking lot with the Northeast Regional Voc Tech, whose address is "100 Hemlock Rd, Wakefield, MA". (Entering "Breakheart Reservation Wakefield Entrance" works too.)

Note that there are three schools in the area. Two are on the main road with the Voc Tech out of sight behind them up a short road to the right of the elementary school. (There is a sign for the Voc Tech at the bottom of the road.)

Pass the guard shack and you will see a large lot. The school will be on the left and two stone pillars at the far end mark the reservation entrance. Park anywhere (it’s free) and we’ll meet to the left of the pillars.

PLEASE NOTE: On the July hike we found Hemlock Road was closed for construction. If it’s closed, park in the school lot at the foot of the hill by the main road. We’ll meet there and walk in (it’s only about 1/8th mile walk up the road to the Reservation entrance and the pillars).

For reference, I’ve included a map with "F" denoting the front entrance and "R" indicating the rear/Wakefield entrance. You want the "R".

I'll  wear my beige Yosemite cap.

Any questions - please send me a message.
