Summary

This is a cross posting from Sundance.  We have 2 open spots for this weekend and would like to offer them to GO members.  Women are welcome on this event.

Weekend hiking outing on Aug. 7-9 for 11 people with 2 day hikes and two nights accommodation in 2 rented houses.  Arrive Friday afternoon/evening and stay two nights, checking out on Sunday morning the 9th.  The weekend is designed for more experienced hikers wanting to take on the challenges and vistas of the Taconic Mountains.  There will be elevation gain involved as well as some easy scrambles and at least one shallow 1 to 2-foot deep stream ford to wade through (bring a towel.)  The outing will end on Sunday afternoon after the Sunday hike.

Two hikes are planned. On Saturday we’ll do a 9-10 mile, 5-6 hour strenuous hike covering Bash Bish Falls and Mt. Alander, done as a one-way hike requiring car shuttling.  On Sunday we’ll do a shorter, easier hike still to be chosen, finishing by mid-afternoon so everyone can get home.  Several of us know the area, and we will “self navigate” any new trails using maps and detailed hike descriptions.

Accommodation is in two rented houses in Copake and Boston Corner, NY for the Friday and Saturday nights.  Each person will have their own bed.  Sheets and towels are provided.  There is a large kitchen and living room area, bathrooms and WIFI in one of the houses.  We’ll have to arrange our own meals so plan on bringing or buying your own breakfast, lunch and snacks.  There are 2 delis in town and an IGA supermarket 10 miles north in Hillsdale.  We will go out for dinner on Sat.  Depending on Friday evening arrival times, those that arrive early enough can decide if they want to go out together for dinner.

As always, we’ve been guaranteed perfect weather.  Nonetheless, the weekend will go ahead rain or shine (the accommodation is non-refundable after July 15th.)  There are lots of rainy day options:  local towns and sites like Hudson (“Hampton on Hudson” with its antique shops, cafes, restaurants, historic main street, etc.); Olana (home of Frederick Church of the Hudson River School of painting); Great Barington, CT; Edna St Vincent Millay Museum, Austerlitz; Shaker Museum, Mt. Lebanon; etc.

Transportation:  it’s up to you to arrange how you get to and from Copake.  The options are:  you can drive yourself, arrange a carpool, or rent a car and share it.  I’ll put in touch those people needing rides so they can work out their plans.  Once we are in Copake we should have enough cars to get everyone to the hike locations during the weekend.

Costs:  $85 each for the house accommodation for the two nights.  You pay your own transportation and food costs.  Once you’ve registered, please mail me a check for $85 for your accommodation, made out to Andrew Brana, mailing address: P.O. Box 76;  Jefferson Valley, NY 10535.

The accommodation doesn’t allow dogs, so unfortunately no dogs on this outing.

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

Copake is on route 22 in New York.  There are a number of ways to ge there.  From Interstate 84, take route 22 north from Brewster, NY.  From the Taconic State Parkway, take route 44 east to route 22 and then 22 north.  From Great Barrington, CT or further north on the Taconic Parkway, take route 23 to route 22, and then 22 south.
