Summary

B.B.T.S.  Black and Blue Trail Smashers!

            Boston Urban Adventure – Starting at the Upper Charles River Reservation -- River Walk Trail/Kayak Launch (Woerd Ave, Waltham MA) the hike will follow the Charles River on various paths to the Charles River Esplanade – crossing various streets to the Boston Common – Boston Freedom Trail (with historical stops) ending at Constitution Plaza.

City or Wilderness SAME RULES APPLY

            This trip is in preparation for the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim Adventure. This trip features the distance without the 100-degree heat, scorpions, rattlesnakes, or tarantulas. This is open to all with the understanding that this will be a STRENOUS hike with STEADY PACE. This is NOT a beginner or season starter.

Total Distance is 18+ miles – this does include various historical stops.

This trip is considered STRENUOUS.

  • Steady/quick pace!!
  • Dirt paths and paved walkways

Participants may park anywhere they want along the walk.

Participants are responsible for personal transportation to and from any point along the walk.

Trip leader will be parking near the Boston Common or in the Boston Common Parking Garage.

 

PREPARATION/WHAT TO BRING:

  • Water/snacks
  • Comfortable walking shoes for urban environment.
  • Sunscreen
  • Backpack

For this trip, it is important to bring along flexibility, patience, and a sense of humor.

Group Size It is not fun leaving folks out.

  • If you cannot attend, PLEASE cancel so others may join.
  • If you are on the waiting list, please contact me days prior to the trip, most likely there will be room and if needed this trail will allow us to break the group into two smaller groups.
  • Please do NOT bring any dogs on this hike.

City or Wilderness – Same rules apply! Decreasing the impact on the environment is always a priority! Please plan to “carry in and carry out” all items. It may also be possible to collect other hikers’ debris along the way.

Weather: If the weather is a concern any updates or cancellation information will be posted by the Thursday prior to 6 pm. If there is a cancellation, it will include a “possible” rescheduled date so participants can watch for that opportunity.

 

Directions To Trailhead Parking Lot

Please meet at 9 am Sharp! At Auburndale Park 104 W Pine Street Newton MA 02466

 

If you want to leave your car at the end point - the USS Constitution Wharf, 1 Constitution Road, Boston MA 02129

Be at that lot by 8 am to depart for the start point at 8:15 SHARP

I called the Nautica Garage lot and he said they never get to full capacity. But if you want to reserve and save a few bucks he said use Spot hero

update: according to parkopedia The USS Constitution Wharf parking is only 2 hours metered. They recommend using the Nautica Parking Garage for parking when visiting the Museum or Ship. The address for the Nautica Parking Garage is 88 Constitution Road, Boston, MA 02129.

there is limited parking availability in that main lot. REfer to their website for alternative parking locations and have a back up plan https://www.navy.mil/USS-CONSTITUTION/Hours-Visitor-Info/?Page=39

I highly recommend that EVERYONE meet at the USS Constitution Wharf, 1 Constitution Road, Boston MA. This is the END of the hike., We can then carpool to the start area. PLEASE MEET by 8 am. If you have other plans and and do not want to carpool please contact me.

Reminder!!! This hike is 19 miles (+/-). Steady walking pace! Please be aware and prepare accordingly.

Please be advised this is a holiday weekend with the Boston Marathon scheduled for Monday. Many streets will be closed, double check routes before arriving in Boston.

Staging vehicles. If you would like to park at the USS Constitution and then CARPOOL to the start point. Please be at the USS Constitution Wharf Parking Lot 1 Constitution Road, Boston MA 02129 at 8 am -- leaving at 8:15am for the starting point. -- if you are interested in this plan please email me directly and quickly.

Hike begins at Auburndale Park, 104 W Pine Street, Newton MA 02466. Parking is available. Gather at 9 am. Please bring snacks and water. We will connecting to and following the Freedom Trail. We are aiming to have lunch at Quincy Market / Faneuil Hall. We will then finish the hike at the USS Constitution. Total trip distance is approx. 19 miles.
